PROJECTS
Reach the World & The Explorers Club

The Explorers Club is glad to announce an ongoing, informal partnership with Reach the World, a nonprofit educational organization whose mission is to link students and teachers in low-income communities with real-world, global expeditions, thereby expanding learning beyond the four walls of the classroom.

Since the launch of Reach the World's flagship expedition, the 1997-1999 circumnavigation of the school-ship Makulu, more than seventy-five public school classrooms in seven states in the USA have worked to design curriculum projects in all academic disciplines related to the expedition. In addition to providing online content, Reach the World offers collaborating classrooms significant support and professional development opportunities linked to each expedition. Reach the World is a compelling means to help children connect to a global community, support educators in a new technological age, and address the digital divide.

Partnership with The Explorers Club
Reach the World held a public lecture at The Explorers Club in fall 2003 and shortly thereafter proposed that The Explorers Club and Reach the World establish an informal partnership based on mutual endorsement and benefit. On May 22, 2004, Reach the World held an event at The Explorers Club to celebrate the homecoming of the Makulu, following a three year expedition.

The Explorers Club is issuing a call to EC members, particularly to those on flag expeditions, to participate in Reach the World as guest travelers on its interactive, educational website. Participants would provide information and images, using Reach the World's templates, about their journeys, and in this way would share their journeys with grade school students from underprivileged communities.

By providing The Explorers Club the opportunity to reach out to a very impressionable, observant, and enthusiastic age group through Reach the World's well-established channel of communication with classrooms, this partnership will aid the Club's efforts to

  • Build on its educational mission
  • Promote its ideals
  • Recruit future explorers
