RESEARCH COLLECTIONS
Holdings

The main subject areas represented are science and scientific investigation, terrestrial exploration in the 19th and 20th centuries, and Explorers Club members.

Holdings include:

  • Artifacts, correspondence, and membership files relating to more than 5000 deceased members of the Club (1904 to present).
  • Official minutes of Club meetings (1911 to present).
  • Several large collections of private papers, including those of The Lady Franklin Bay Expedition (1881-1884), The Peary Arctic Club (1899-1910) and The Arctic Club of America (1894-1912).
  • More than 15,000 catalogued books on exploration and explorers, with subject strengths in late 19th and early 20th century polar regions and Africa.
  • Map collection of 5000 sheet maps, none antiquarian, many annotated.
  • The Explorers Journal (the Club's official public journal) 1921 to present. Since 2002, the Journal has featured a column "Ex Post Facto" about the Club's archives.
  • The Explorers Log (the Club's official newsletter for members).
  • Numerous small collections of manuscripts, film, and photographic materials, much of which is not yet processed (and is therefore unavailable).

Please note the following restrictions:
Materials do not circulate; researchers are supervised at all times; unprocessed materials are not available for research; undirected/casual surveys of Club materials are not permitted.

Visitors must comply with all library rules, written or otherwise.
