About The Dinner's Theme
What's Left to Explore? A few steps into the new millennium and The Explorers Club's second century, we are finding the answer is: Just about everything.

Speakers

Dr. Edward O. Wilson, Harvard University professor emeritus, is internationally regarded as the preeminent biological theorist of the twentieth century and a pioneer in the field of biodiversity.

Ed Viesturs, is America's leading high-altitude mountaineer, having climbed many of the world's most challenging summits, including ascending Mount Everest six times. He is currently on a quest to climb all 14 of the world's highest mountains without the use of supplemental oxygen.

Wade Davis, world-renowned ethnobotanist and an Explorer-in-Residence at the National Geographic Society, spent over three years in the Amazon and Andes, living among fifteen indigenous groups while making some 6000 botanical collections. He has published some fifty scientific articles on subjects ranging from Haitian vodoun to the global biodiversity crisis.

Andy Skurka, Backpacker Magazine's "Person of the Year", carried Flag 42 as he became the first person to hike the Sea-to-Sea Transcontinental Trail across North America, a journey spanning 7,770 miles and 11 months from summer 2004 to 2005.

Honorees

The Explorers Medal, the Club's highest honor, will be presented to J. Michael Fay, National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence and conservationist for Wildlife Conservation Society, who spent fifteen months flying a small plane across Africa to record environmental data.

The Aldrin Quadrennial Space Exploration Award will be presented to Valentina Vladimirovna Tereshkova, the famed Russian cosmonaut who in 1963 became the first woman in space. On her 71-hour Vostok 6 mission, she travelled 1.2 million miles, orbiting the Earth 48 times. The award will be presented by Buzz Aldrin.

Jack Reilly will receive the Sweeney Medal for his outstanding contributions to the welfare of the Club, including his work chairing the Annual Dinner and the Public Lectures.

Joseph Frey will receive the Citation of Merit for exceptional service to the Club through his leadership as chair of the Club's Canadian Chapter.

The President's Award for Conservation will be presented to Tim Gallagher, Bobby Harrison, and Gene Sparling, who made headlines this year for rediscovering the ivory-billed woodpecker, which was previously thought to be extinct.

The Explorers Club Communication Award will be presented to Luc Jacquet, director of the world-acclaimed documentary March of the Penguins.

Flag Return

Explorers Mikael and Titti Strandberg returned Flag 95, which they carried to Northeastern Siberia on Expedition Kolyma, September 2004 to April 2005.

Live Auction
The Live Auction lots was on exhibit in the ECAD Reception Rooms at the Waldorf=Astoria. The Live Auction took place during dinner, conducted by Hugh Hildesley, Senior Auctioneer from Sotheby’s.

Silent Auction
The Silent Auction has become a very popular feature of the Annual Dinner. It is made possible through the generosity of our members, who donate beautiful artifacts, trips and adventures, and explorer-ready gear to be auctioned. This year we conducted the Silent Auction both at the Waldorf and online here at explorers.org.
