Julianne M. Chase, Ph.D., FR ‘97

Julianne Chase, Ph.D. is an explorer, teacher, scientist and mentor whose dedication to understanding the interaction between humans and nature has drawn her to some of the most remote locations on Earth. In pursuit of interests in cultural anthropology, environmental ecology and paleontology, she has been a member of scientific expeditions to the Arctic, Antarctic, Amazon, Australia, Africa, the Badlands, Easter Island, the Galapagos and the Gobi Desert. She is a popular speaker and author featured at many academic and cultural institutions. Her presentations address the ecological, cultural and scientific aspects of her expeditions and are dynamic, interactive, informative and inspiring - bringing the excitement of field science to life.

Dedicated to advancing the mission of The Explorers Club through service leadership, Julie serves as Vice President for Research and Education and on the Science Advisory Committee. She marshals The Explorers Club grants for students, our next generation of stellar explorers. She has served on the Membership Committee since 2000, was the first woman to serve as Vice President for Membership 2002-2004, and served on the Lecture Committee 2002-2003, 2008-2009. She participated in five Explorers Club Flag Expeditions, among them projects that delved into the destruction of the primeval soils of Easter Island and dramatic ecological changes in the Galapagos, presenting her experiences at the Club’s lecture and seminar series. Julie served 10 years as a Trustee for the Science Museum of Long Island and, dedicated to experiential science education, has led many field science expeditions for teens.

Dr. Chase is an educational consultant providing expertise in innovative curriculum and faculty development. A former Associate Dean for Education and Associate Professor of Medicine at New York University School of Medicine, she has won national awards related to medical ethics and professionalism from the American Medical Association and American Board of Internal Medicine.
