In 1973, The Explorers Club awarded a grant to a 14 year-old boy to accompany leading astrophysicists to observe a total solar eclipse off the coast of South Africa. The Explorers Club is proud to have supported Neil deGrasse Tyson in this early exposure to a universe of possibility.

Astrophysicist Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson is universally-distinguished and his research interests are broad: star formation, exploding stars, dwarf galaxies, dark matter, and the structure of our Milky Way. Dr. Tyson is Frederick P. Rose Director of the Hayden Planetarium in New York City and a Research Associate in Astrophysics at the American Museum of Natural History.

Passionate about the necessity of space exploration, Dr. Tyson has served on the Commission for the Implementation of the U.S. Space Exploration Policy and advised the National Academy of Sciences Committee on Evolution, as well as the NASA Advisory Council. His leadership has influenced space exploration policy and rekindled exploratory fervor in the public.

Aside from numerous research publications, Dr. Tyson has authored ten books including a memoir The Sky is Not the Limit: Adventures of an Urban Astrophysicist; and Origins: Fourteen Billion Years of Cosmic Evolution. He hosted NOVA ScienceNOW, Cosmos: A SpaceTime Odyssey, and StarTalk.

Dr. Tyson sparks enthusiasm for science with his charismatic explanations of many issues. He is especially attentive to the mentoring of students, and the inclusion of girls in Science Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) programs.

Dr. Tyson is the recipient of eighteen honorary doctorates and the NASA Distinguished Public Service Medal. The International Astronomical Union recognized his contributions by their official naming of asteroid 13123 Tyson.

He inspires millions, keeps the dream of exploration alive, and is shaping the understanding of our place in the universe. In sum, Dr. Tyson has made significant contributions to the Welfare of Humanity through science and education.
