To boldly go where no one has gone before: exploring the guano of the world’s largest bat cave

Dr. George Veni, FN’12

Bracken Cave, Texas, holds the world’s largest colony of bats, estimated at 40 million. But what is the depth of bat guano that covers the floor? Working with Bat Conservation International and the National Speleological Society, Dr. George Veni conducted the world’s first geophysical survey of bat guano. Join Dr. Veni as he describes the challenges of working in this bizarre and harsh environment, the results of this novel research, and its importance to understanding past climatic and environmental conditions. Dr. George Veni is the Executive Director of the National Cave and Karst Research Institute and an internationally recognized cave explorer and geologist.
