ECAD Public Lecture with New Explorer Award Winner Ian Mangiardi

Our 2019 New Explorer Award Winner, Ian Mangiardi is a trained Wilderness-EMT, chef, writer, and producer. He has lived his life with the goal to bring people outdoors safely and comfortably so that they may enjoy, and, in turn, protect our wild spaces. Growing up in the concrete jungle of Manhattan, he learned early on that the only way to turn imagination into reality is a sense of purpose, dedication, and hard work. In 2009, he started a non-profit organization: The Dusty Camel, a company that consults on expedition planning at all levels.

He’s honed his ability to gracefully navigate difficult situations, such as high altitude medical evacuations in Bhutan, and backcountry trekking across various challenging landscapes, completing both the Pacific Crest and Appalachian Trails. Adapting his skills to create photo and video shoots for Photobomb Production, he’s now able to merge his passion for the outdoors by producing exploratory photo shoots and events, where he brings clients from the tops of glaciers in Alaska to the uncompromising deserts of Mongolia.

Most recently, led by the Hong Kong Chapter of the Explorers Club, he worked to orchestrate a three-week scientific expedition across the Gobi Desert using multi-spectral imaging and drone technologies in collaboration with the Institute of Paleontology and Geology to lay the foundation for the next generation of Paleontology in Mongolia. Ian is on a journey to continue his path of exploration, and grow his passion to learn, innovate, share and lead.

He will share with guests his tales from the field, the full story of the Roy Chapman Andrews Centennial Expedition, and where in the world he is headed next!
