Ernest Shackleton Loves Me: Launch Dinner with Prof. Arnold Gordon

The Explorers Club celebrates the launch of the new Off-Broadway musical Ernest Shackleton Loves Me on the 100th Anniversary of Sir Ernest Shackleton's safe return from the Antarctic. In attendance will be the creative team behind the critically acclaimed show, written by Tony-award winner Joe DiPietro who was inspired by the epic journey of Shackleton's Endurance expedition. Ernest Shackleton Loves Me opens at Second Stage on May 7th.

Join us as the cast of the musical performs live, sharing a sneak peek of music from the show. Mingle with Club members and the show's creatives at a dinner feast surrounded by images from the both the show and from the Antarctic journey. Matthew Kwatinetz, producer of the Off-Broadway show, will offer a toast to Shackleton's crew as together we enjoy the desserts these brave men both longed for on their journey and wrote about in their journals 100 years ago, all re-created for us by The Explorers Club chef.

After dinner, Columbia University Professor of Oceanography Arnold Gordon, researcher at Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, will speak about his pioneering work to explore the west Weddell Sea. In collaboration with the Russian Arctic & Antarctic Research Institute, Professor Gordon organized the 1992 Ice Station Weddell program, in which a research camp was deployed on a sea ice floe in the region of Shackleton's journey. Gordon will describe his plans to return with Ice Station Weddell 2. Gordon was awarded the Maurice Ewing Medal of the American Geophysical Union, the Prince Albert I Medal by the International Association for the Physical Sciences of the Ocean, and is an Honorary Member of the American Polar Society.
