"Expedition: Fashion from the Extreme" with the Museum at FIT

Expeditions to the North and South poles, the highest mountain peaks, and depths of the ocean, and outer space have captivated and molded the 20th century. These harrowing tales and feats of scientific discovery have permeated into many, albeit sometimes unlikely, aspects of our world.

Join us for a cocktail party at The Explorers Club as we celebrate the book launch of Expedition: Fashion from the Extreme, the culmination of a collaborative effort with the Museum at FIT. This exhibition and book serve as the first major study to explore the relationship between clothing made for survival in the most inhospitable environments on earth and beyond, and the high fashion and modern wardrobe mainstays it has inspired. The team behind Expedition will share a behind-the-scenes-look into the inspiration for the project from both fashion and exploration perspectives.

While it may have influenced high fashion, the discernible purpose behind expedition gear is critical to each mission. Explorers Club Fellow Christine Dennison will discuss her personal experiences in the field and the importance of working with appropriate equipment. Christine is a native “Manhattanite” who swims with sharks, piranhas in the Amazon rain forest and scuba dives under polar ice caps.

She was the first woman to scuba in the arctic waters of the Northwest Passage and the Amazon’s Rio Negro. She leads expeditions to the most remote corners of the world and has been honored as a Fellow in The Explorers Club and the Royal Geographical Society of London. She has been awarded the Brazilian Navy League’s Medal of Honor for her work in the discovery of the US submarine R-12 in which two Brazilian officers are entombed.

She is the co-founder and president of Mad Dog Expeditions an exploration, adventure company, and supports nonprofit organizations that promote ocean conservation, education, exploration, and animal rescue. She writes a monthly column entitled “Exploring Women” in Misadventure Magazine and is on air expert for TV and News programs.

The exhibition Expedition: Fashion from the Extreme is on display at the Museum at FIT until January 6, 2018. It features fashions by a diverse group of designers, including Norma Kamali, Junya Wantanabe, Thom Browne, Karl Lagerfeld, and Hussein Chalayan. You can also join us for Fashion, Science, and Exploration, a daylong academic symposium which explores the impact of scientific thought on fashion presented by MFIT. The symposium is free and open to the public with RSVP.
