The Explorers Club is proud to welcome General Charles Duke, one of only 12 humans to have walked on the moon. The live interview session, led by Jim Clash, is part of the Club’s new Exploring Legends series.
“The idea of the Exploring Legends series is to select the world’s great explorers and have an intimate chat – or as intimate as one can have in front of a live audience,” explains Club President Alan Nichols. “No visual props or PowerPoints – just one-on-one discourse between Clash and his guest. That way interviewees are forced to be more spontaneous than the “canned” speeches they are used to giving.”
Duke, a member of the 108-year-old Explorers Club, became the youngest man to step onto the lunar surface April 20, 1972, as part of Apollo 16. He was famous even before he flew: As a mission control specialist in Houston when Apollo 11 ran long on its landing – barely reaching the lunar surface before using all of its fuel – Duke, now 77, deadpanned in a southern drawl, “Tranquility, we copy you on the ground. You got a bunch of guys about to turn blue. We're breathing again. Thanks a lot!"
Clash, a long-time adventure journalist and Club Fellow, is author of “The Right Stuff: Interviews with Icons of the 1960s” and “Forbes To The Limits." In addition to visits to the North and South Poles, he has flown to the edge of space in a MiG fighter jet, driven at 253 mph in the Bugatti Veyron and climbed the Matterhorn and virgin peaks in Greenland and Antarctica.
Duke is the third guest in the new Exploring Legends series. The first two, earlier this year, were world-record diver Don Walsh and seven-time Shuttle astronaut Franklin Chang-Diaz. Future luminaries will include mountaineer Scott Parazynski, the only person to summit Mt. Everest and fly in space; Geoffrey Notkin, acclaimed meteorite hunter and star of Discovery Channel’s TV series Meteorite Men; and Richard Garriott, who flew as a paying passenger to the International Space Station aboard a Soyuz rocket and is son of Skylab astronaut Owen Garriott.
