Exploring Legends With K2 Climber Vanessa O'Brien

Vanessa O'Brien MN'13, a 52-year-old former Morgan Stanley banker, took up climbing late in life. She didn't waste any time making her mark. In 2012, O'Brien became the then-fastest woman to climb the "Seven Summits" (highest mountain on each continent) plus ski to the North and South Poles, completing the feat in just 11 months.

On K2, at 28,251 feet the world's second highest peak, O'Brien had tried twice before this year, in 2015 and 2016, but bad weather kept her and all climbing teams from the top. On July 28 of this year, though, she fought iffy weather to become the first American woman to summit K2. O'Brien, who has an MBA from New York University, resides in Manhattan with her husband Jonathan.

Interviewer Jim Clash FR’99 will discuss with O'Brien her background as a former banker, what drove her to become the first American woman to summit K2, the differences between K2 and Everest, what's next for her, and more. At the end of the interview, as is customary, Jim will open the floor to audience questions.
