NYC - Film Screening - How Black Holes Shape Our Universe

How Black Holes Shape Our Universe,
A Multimedia Adventure

Presented by Kevin Schawinski as part of the
Zurich Meets New York Festival and ETH

The Explorers Club cordially invites you to a New York premiere event in conjunction with ETH and the Zurich Meets NY Festival.

How do you find the ghost of a supermassive black hole? And what can it tell us about the origin of galaxies? At the centers of almost all galaxies lurks a black hole with a mass a million to ten billion times the mass of our sun. And rather than quietly lurking, these black holes can turn - despite their sinister reputation - into the brightest objects in the universe. When gas and dust falls into such a monster, it can release more energy than the 100 billion stars in its host galaxy combined: we call this feeding black hole a quasar. The energy released is so huge that we suspect that growing black holes can fundamentally alter the evolutionary pathways of their host galaxies.

The Galaxy Zoo online citizen science project has enlisted the help of over 250,000 members of the public to go out and explore the universe by classifying galaxies observed by telescopes such as Hubble.

Kevin Schawinski (born 1981) is Professor of galaxy and black hole astrophysics at ETH Zurich and the co-founder of the Galaxy Zoo online citizen science project, which has engaged over half a million people in scientific research.

This event is part of Zürich Meets New York: A Festival of Swiss Ingenuity, May 16-23, 2014, which highlights the contemporary relevance of visionary movements and ideas born in Zurich and their impact on American culture. Building on the upcoming 100th anniversary of the Dada movement and Zurich’s role as a 21st-century hub for artistic and scientific innovation, the festival features 25 events at venues across the city, and is presented by the Consulate General of Switzerland in New York, the City of Zurich, ETH Zurich and the University of Zurich (UZH).
