Jazz On A Summer’s Eve at The Explorer’s Club

Featuring Bert Stern’s Jazz On A Summer’s Day

The Explorers Club cordially invites you to the screening of Jazz On A Summer’s Day, a documentary set at the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival. The film mixes images of water and the city with the performers and audience at the festival. It also features scenes of the 1958 America's Cup yacht races.

Stars include: Louis Armstrong, Monk, Dinah Washington, Anita O’Day, Chuck Berry, Gerry Mulligan, Sonny Stitt, Chico Hamilton, George Shearing, Mahailia Jackson, Johnny Mandel, Max Roach, Big May Belle, and Jimmy Guifree, among others.

The film won Best Documentary when it premiered in Venice, Italy 1960, and later aired on CBS, A&E, HBO, and was honored at Lincoln Center in 2008. It was the first music festival in America and the first documentary recorded in stereo, thanks to Louis Armstrong.

In 1999, it was listed by The Library of Congress as one of the top 100 films produced in the 20th Century, and a copy rests in our National Repository.
