Mind of the Demon – Great White Sharks with Fabien Cousteau

Public Lecture Series with Fabien Cousteau

Fabien Cousteau will take guests inside the Mind of the Demon. In 2006, and for the first time in 25 years, a unique shark-based documentary entitled Mind Of A Demon (MOD) rocked CBS primetime to grab second place in the ratings. The story itself was based on Fabien Cousteau’s crazy childhood dream: to build a shark-shaped submersible akin to the one in the comic book series Tintin. With the help of a large crew, Fabien created a 14-foot, 1,200-pound, lifelike shark submarine called “Troy” that enabled him to immerse himself inside the shark world.

Fabien’s idea was to swim camouflaged among great white sharks to study them without the distractions of divers, cages and chumming the water. This innovative approach was met with both enthusiasm and doubt. Despite its challenges, Fabien and his team of scientists were able to accomplish more than ever before. Through the lens of the sub, communication behavior among white sharks was observed for the first time.

Fabien Cousteau is the grandson of famed sea explorer Jacques Cousteau, and a third-generation ocean explorer and filmmaker. He has worked with National Geographic, Discovery, PBS, and CBS to produce ocean exploration documentaries and continues to produce environmentally-oriented content for schools, books, magazines, and newspapers.
