Since the time of Julius Caesar, it's well known that the Mediterranean is home to massive and elusive whales -- both fin whales and sperm whales -- yet nobody went searching for them until 1998. During six weeks in the whale’s triangle (Genoa, Cote d’Azur, Corsica), Alberto Recchi -- with the aid of a small spotting plane and a motor boat -- led the first expedition in search of these giants. This massive effort resulted in some beautiful pictures and ended with an article in the Italian edition of National Geographic. Yet little is still known about these inquisitive mammals.
In 1999 Alberto led Obiettivo Squali, “Mission Sharks,” the first dedicated shark discovery expedition along the Mediterranean coasts of Italy and Malta. Five Italian shark scientists from various universities spent six months on a 72 foot boat, using 6 tons of chum to search for the sharks.
Journalist, documentary maker and photographer Alberto Luca Recchi has been narrating life in the oceans with his photos for over 30 years, searching for the sea giants which are his passion. He has dedicated a great part of his efforts to sharks in particular, taking part in research expeditions all over the world. He has revealed secrets and curiosities about these animals through videos, conferences and television programs -- but especially with his prize-winning photographs, which have appeared in the most prestigious Italian and foreign language publications, winning several awards and acknowledgements.
Since 1992 Alberto has written several books on the ocean and marine life:
• DENTRO IL MEDITERRANEO
• MOSTRI MARINI
• SQUALI COME NON LI AVETE MAI VISTI
• ALLA SCOPERTA DEGLI SQUALI
In 2001-2 Alberto organized a shark-themed exhibition, which found widespread success and was visited by over 300,000 people in Rome, Naples and Milan. In 2006, Alberto wrote and performed “Sharks” the musical in some of the biggest theaters across Italy.
