NYC - Lecture Series w/ David Gruber

David Gruber will present the results of his National Geographic/Waitt Expedition to the Western Province of the Solomon Islands and other recent field expeditions. On these adventures, he and his collaborators have utilized technical scuba, custom-designed underwater vehicles, ultra-low light underwater cameras and specialized lighting to investigate bioluminescence and biofluorescence. He will share imagery of several newfound biofluorescent species of marine invertebrates and sharks. The results of this research transcends into biomedical science and the lecture will touch upon how luminescent and fluorescent animals have helped illuminate the inner workings of cells and led to breakthroughs in fields such as oncology and neuroscience.

David Gruber is an Associate Professor of Biology at Baruch College, City University of New York and a Research Associate in Invertebrate Zoology at the American Museum of Natural History. He completed a PhD in biological oceanography from the Rutgers University Institute of Marine and Coastal Sciences in 2007. His research pertains to marine molecular biology, with a focus on coral reefs. David was a postdoctoral fellow at the Brown University Division of Biology and Medicine, working to develop fluorescent proteins from corals into modulatable probes with neurobiological and medical applications.

In addition, Prof. Gruber is committed to communicating science to the general public. He serves as a scientific advisor and producer for WNYC Studio 360's "Science and Creativity" series and his writings have appeared in The New Yorker, Nature Medicine and The Best American Science Writing. He is the co-author of "Aglow in the Dark: The Revolutionary Science of Biofluorescence" (Harvard University Press). He holds master's degrees in coastal environmental management from Duke University and in journalism from Columbia University.
