NYC - Lecture Series w/ Ryan Salm

In a world dominated by mass media, travel shows, easily download travel apps, and countless visual technologies, where can a true explorer get off-the-beaten path and chart their own unique course on the map?

Ryan's recent month-long trip to the Kumbh Mela in India met those demands of his as an adventure photographer and photo-journalist. He and his team spent two weeks at the largest gathering of human beings on the planet and then traveled for a week by inflatable SUP (Stand Up Paddleboard) from the festival down the Ganges River to the holy city of Varanasi. The result is titled, "Surf the Ganges - A Quest for Purity Amongst Pollution". This presentation is Ryan’s account of being part of a festival with over a hundred million Hindu pilgrims and holy men followed by his paddle boarding journey down one of the world's most holy and polluted rivers.

Did he get lost? Did he confront his fears and bathe in the Holy Ganges? Did the Indian Police arrest him for attempting to paddle the Holy River? Did he fall off his paddleboard into epic disease-ridden waters?

The intersection of an education in geography, communications and photography and a desire to understand some of the most remote cultures and lands has led Ryan Salm to document, and photograph some of the world’s most distant and awe-inspiring events. Ryan has made it his career to travel parts of the globe inaccessible to most in order to bring these experiences back home where he can educate and entertain his followers through photography, cinematography and photo journalism. Ryan’s most recent projects have created a new type of cultural and entertainment narrative – one that combines the cutting edge of action sports with a look into some of the most unique and possibly unknown cultural events in corners of the globe many will never get the opportunity to visit or see.

Ryan's work can be seen regularly in the pages of: Patagonia, Outside, Powder, ESPN, Mountain Magazine, Islands, Backcountry Magazine, Wend, Surfer's Journal, Standup Journal, SUP, Big Agnes, Julbo, Squaw Valley USA, Alpine Meadows, Builder Magazine, Nevada Tourism Board, Tahoe Quarterly, Philadelphia Inquirer, SFGate, Lake Tahoe Visitor Guide, Nevada Magazine, Adventure Sports Journal.
