100 Miles of Wild - the North Dakota Badlands Expedition

This event will be streamed live. Please visit our Live Stream page at 7pm on the evening of the event to view the lecture for free.

North Dakota is in the midst of an unprecedented oil-boom that has lead to a rapid increase in road-construction, drilling, pipelines, and infrastructure throughout the oil-rich Bakken Formation. The rapid pace of this massive industry has caused an astonishing expansion of drilling pads and roads into the wild interior of North Dakota. Questions about the environmental impact abound, as the growth and rapid advance of the drilling front is at a scale that is difficult for anyone to perceive and understand. This has created significant polarity amongst North Dakota residents – some opposed to the rapid growth, others in support of it, all deeply affected by it. This Flag expedition ( Flag #112) 100 Miles of Wild project had a simple aim: discover first-hand the condition of the “wilderness” that inspired Roosevelt’s effort to preserve wilderness for all Americans and the World.

In Spring 2013, Simon and the Adventure Science team began their human powered survey, covering over 270 miles as the first project of its kind across the rugged badlands. Rather than take the established Maah-Daah-Hey Trail, the team navigated primarily off-trail through historic and geographic areas of inter-est, including Theodore Roosevelt’s Elkhorn Ranch. Teams travelled to seldom-visited, isolated places within the Badlands, typically staying within the boundaries of the federally-administered Little Missouri National Grassland. Simon will walk the audience through the expedition using slides and video, discuss results of the expedition, and detail what the current political situation is in North Dakota with respect to the drilling boom.

Formerly a petroleum geologist, Simon now stars in the hit show Boundless on the Esquire Network, and is known across the world for being an elite adventure athlete. The show features Simon as he travels across the globe competing in grueling endurance races in some of the world’s most challenging terrains.
In 2008, Simon founded Adventure Science, a company that specializes in leading scientists and search parties into remote locations using non-motorize means when possible. In 2012, Simon and the crew at Adventure Science led the search to find the missing legendary ultra-marathon runner, Micah True. Some of his other notable adventures include; his documentary film Go Death Racer; Beyond Roads: The Musandam Oman Expedition; and the Search for Steve Fossett. Simon is also a proud member of the Explorer’s Club, president of Stoked Oats Ltd., has a PHD in Geology, and is an Explorer in Residence for Kensington Tours.
