NYC - Public Lecture Series w/ Don Kaufman

The Elusive Nile - Explorers and the Changing Map of Africa

This event will be streamed live. Please visit our Live Stream page at 7pm on the evening of the event to view the lecture for free.

This program provides a graphic overview of the changing depictions of the Nile and it’s sources as shown on printed maps of the 16th to 19th century. The varying representations reflect the numerous theories concerning it’s origins, beginning with the ancient Greeks. Examples of each different theoretical configuration is shown. Emphasized is the 19th century period of exploration, primarily from the Burton-Speke expedition to Stanley’s last journey. We see how each explorer’s successive findings continually altered them map until the depictions of the Nile and it’s lake basin sources reflected reality.

In addition to the portrayal of an ever-changing system of lakes and rivers, close-up photography clearly illustrates the beauty of the artistic cartouches and imaginative creations of the early cartographers.

Contemporary photos of African sites, graphics from 19th century books and magazines, explanatory drawings and satellite views expand and augment the program beyond the limits of it solely being a cartographic presentation.

After receiving a BA from Colby College in Maine, Don Kaufman assembled a collection of 300 antique maps of Africa over a period of two decades. He received his MA in African Studies from St. John’s University and studied Swahili for a year at NYU. Subsequently, he spent six months traveling alone overland throughout the continent, focusing on East Africa - the first of seven trips to different regions of Africa. Returning home, Don became a member of the NY Maps Society and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Geographic Society. He then began an extended period of research to produce a two projector 35mm slide lecture. Within the last two years, using Apple Keynote software and extensive additional research, Kaufman has revised and enhanced the original program.
