Out of Sight: Tracking Down the World’s Most Neglected Diseases in Congo and Nigeria

The Explorers Club invites you to an interactive evening of 360-degree short films about the worst diseases you’ve never heard of – disfiguring and deadly parasitic infections that wreak havoc in some of the most inaccessible regions on earth. We’ll be screening these exclusive films – produced by the HuffPost – on virtual reality (VR) headsets, meeting some real live parasitic worms, and hearing from doctors and scientists that are at the forefront of the fight against these diseases.

Last year a VR film crew from the HuffPost traveled to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Nigeria to document three diseases: Human African Trypanosomiasis, or ‘sleeping sickness’; lymphatic filariasis, aka ‘elephantiasis’; and onchocerciasis, or ‘river blindness’. The films were produced as part of the Huff Post’s Project Zero, a one-year initiative to raise awareness around neglected tropical diseases.

Ilan Moss, Explorers Club Fellow, joined the filmmakers on their trip to the Democratic Republic of Congo, where his organization the Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative (DNDi) is running clinical trials for sleeping sickness. Ilan will introduce us to the diseases, tell stories of some of the patients he met, and talk about DNDi’s work to bring the best science to the most neglected. Paul Josephson from the HuffPost will speak about the experience of shooting VR in remote areas of Africa.

Sara Lustigman from the New York Blood Center will be another special guest – bringing some of her live filarial nematode worms that are responsible for river blindness and elephantiasis. When you are not viewing the 360 films, we hope you will take some time to check out Dr. Lustigman’s worms, speak with some of the doctors who have treated these diseases, or learn more about DNDi’s work for neglected patients.
