Seminar Series - Chris Nicola

On Tuesday, November 14, 2017, Chris Nicola, FR’04 will conduct a special seminar devoted to ‘Expedition Planning.’ Starting as a caver in the mid-1970s, Chris has traveled the world, leading and organizing over 40 international expeditions. In these pursuits Chris accumulated a wealth of practical knowledge about assembling exploratory trips to an array of destinations, many in extremely remote regions. Often these areas were devoid of medical services, transportation, electrical power, and had no communication with the ‘outside world’. In his career as an explorer, Chris learned to rely only upon himself and fellow team members to accomplish the expedition’s goals in a safe, secure, efficient manner, while knowing the ‘unforeseen’ might dictate a rapid need for alternate courses of action to preserve team safety and mission objectives.

Chris will provide Members with a wide ranging body of knowledge. Whether in the jungles of Brazil, on Galapagos beaches, climbing an Icelandic glacier, trekking in a Mongolian desert, crossing Crimean karst plateaus, crawling in a Moroccan cave stream, rappelling into a 1000 foot deep Mexican void, or ascending from a North Carolina ship wreck at sea bottom, Chris learned sound expedition planning, following a basic set of rules and principles, goes far to ensure the successful completion of any expedition. In this session Chris will share his rules and principles as they relate to logistics, pre-expedition reconnaissance and research, budgeting, transport, visas, vaccinations, insurance, training, fitness, diet, equipment, communication, safety, security, health, data preservation and contingency planning.
