Seminar Series - Marc Bryan-Brown

Marc Bryan-Brown, MN’95

Current Trends in Expedition Photography

On November 1, 2016, Marc Bryan-Brown will lead a seminar on expedition photography. As Marc explains, we have come a long way since Frank Hurley accompanied Sir Ernest Shackleton on the famed Trans-Arctic Expedition. Hurley photographed on glass plates with enormous view cameras, creating iconic images that have helped immortalize that doomed voyage. Today the smart phone in your pocket is, at times, capable of producing equally dramatic images. As in 1913, photography is a crucial element of any expedition’s documentation, and extremely important to most sponsors wishing to publicize their generosity. Capabilities and equipment are tied to the technological revolution and change rapidly. Marc’s seminar will present a hands-on overview of current equipment available, with photographic examples of what they can do. DSLR and mirror-less cameras, wireless transmitters, carbon fiber tripods and software solutions will be discussed.

This seminar will explore the following questions:

•  Do I ever need a tripod?
•  How good is my Smartphone? Do I really need a DSLR?
•  Do I ever need to use a flash?
•  What responsibilities should the photographer cover?
•  What about video?
•  The iPhone now shoots RAW! Why do we care?
•  The state of mirrorless cameras.
•  Do I need a full frame chip?
•  How can I carry my stuff without destroying my back?

And most importantly….do I need a dedicated photographer?

Marc is a professional photographer living in the Hudson Valley, shooting commercially for Fortune 500 companies. Among Marc’s expeditions are two flag expeditions to Arctic Siberia, and a trip to the Kackar Mountains of northeastern Turkey to source heirloom garlic.
