Seminar Series - Trevor Wallace

Expedition Filmmaking

There are so many ways to document an expedition, but what is the best way to capture the story of your journey?

In this seminar, Trevor will cover the common tools in digital filmmaking including drones, 360 video/virtual reality, Go Pros, smartphones, motorized gimbals and more. He will share the best practices and pitfalls that he has learned through the experience of shooting in environments ranging from the Arctic tundra to the dunes of the Taklamakan Desert. Trevor will go through his equipment hands on and field any questions participants may have about their gear.

Topics covered/ questions answered:
1.) What are the common pitfalls for explorers trying to document their journey for the first time? How do you prepare each day for filming? How do you balance research/exploration/logistics with the task of documentation?
2.) Where is it legal to fly a drone? What are the benefits of passing the FAA Part 107 UAS Aeronautical Knowledge Test? How do you register a drone? What is the best drone for you?
3.) What is 360 video? What kinds of situations are best for virtual reality?
4.) What is the best way to leverage social media to reach a broad audience of supporters?

Trevor is a member of the Explorers Club specializing in video documentation of expeditions in harsh environments and working with indigenous communities. His films have been screened at the Polar Film Festival, Cannes Short Film Corner, and the American Museum of Natural History. He is currently working on a feature length documentary on a series of expeditions to Central Asia searching for Iron Age artifacts and frozen mummies.

Exploration Seminars Program:

As in the past, the Club’s more experienced and accomplished Members will address practical field needs and disciplines directly relevant to exploration. The common goal of the series is to contribute and expand field knowledge in a ‘show me how to’ format, with several sessions providing a ‘hands on’ approach.

Please note the Exploration Seminars are for Members only, without charge, but reservations are required due to limited seating in the Board Room. Members wishing to attend should email the Club Receptionist at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address), to secure space.
