Special Event: Arthur Beaumont's Art of the Sea

Arthur Beaumont is the most noted of all official artists for the United States Navy, and his Naval career spans an unprecedented five decades.

In 1957, at the age of 67, he served as the official staff artist to Task Group 572 West, where he recorded the activities of the International Geophysical Year expedition. Based in Point Barrow, Alaska, aboard the flagship, USS Eldorado, Beau sailed and flew more than 30,000 miles, painting and sketching the Arctic territory.

As part of this expedition, he captured the action as the Canadian icebreaker Labrador led the way through the Beaufort Sea and the Amundsen Gulf to the famed Bellot Strait. Deep-water vessels of the expedition traversed from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean through the ice for the first time in history.

Beaumont also met Lowell Thomas in the arctic on expedition in the late 50s, and did a painting of his film crew exploring the ice. They became friends, and after several expeditions, he was later invited to present at The Explorers Club. Arthur brought seven paintings to the Club along with him at Thomas’ behest, and all seven were later purchased and donated back to the Club by a Member. Among the works in the Club’s collection is the first watercolor painting done at the South Pole.

Join his son Geoffrey Beaumont for a look into Arthur’s distinguished career, with particular emphasis on his time spent painting Arctic and Antarctic expedition vessels. Copies of the book "Arthur Beaumont: Art of the Sea" will also be available for purchase and signing.

We will also have all seven Beaumont paintings in the Club's collection on display for viewing during the reception.
