Special Event - "Why Dinosaurs Matter" with Dr. Kenneth Lacovara

Join world-renowned paleontologist Dr. Kenneth Lacovara on a remarkable journey—back to when dinosaurs roamed the Earth—to discover fundamental truths about our own humanity. Lacovara reveals dinosaurs to be widespread, persistent, and innovative creatures that achieved feats unparalleled by any other species. Yet dinosaurs remain mysterious and misunderstood.

In this quest to understand these titanic creatures, attendees will meet astonishing dinosaurs like the Anzu (a cross between a 500-pound chicken and a drawer full of knives), the Ankylosaurus (a 13 ton armored tank) and Lacovara’s own discovery: the mighty Dreadnoughtus (which weighs more than seven T. rex.).

These sublimely adaptable, remarkable creatures deserve our awe and respect, yes, but also can teach us about our own humanity. This eye-opening look into the strange and calamitous event that wiped out the dinosaurs deftly weaves together the story of their existence on Earth with our own. Why Dinosaurs Matter is ultimately an urgent reminder that our place on this planet is precarious and potentially fleeting. We must look to the past to protect our future.

This special event is in conjunction with the launch of Dr. Lacovara's new book, Why Dinosaurs Matter. Books will be available for purchase, and Ken will sign copies after the event.

Dr. Kenneth Lacovara has unearthed some of the largest dinosaurs ever to walk our planet, including the super-massive Dreadnoughtus. At Rowan University he is the founding Dean of the School of Earth & Environment and Director of the Jean & Ric Edelman Fossil Park, which he led the effort to create. Within its quarry, Lacovara and his team are using a rich cache of 65 million year old fossils to solve the mystery of the extinction of the dinosaurs. He has appeared in numerous television documentaries and his discoveries have landed him three times in Discover magazine’s 100 Top Science Stories of the year and in Time’s Top Stories of 2014. Lacovara was named by Men’s Journal as one of “The Next Generation of Explorers” and he is an Explorers Club Fellow, elected in 2003.
