The Explorers Club at the Beach: Sunset Speaker Series with Andy Stern, Colleen Henn, & Will Skudin

The Smartfin
with Andy Stern, M.D., Colleen Henn of the Surfrider Foundation, and Professional Surfer Will Skudin

Hosted by Ryan Chadwick at The Grey Lady, in Montauk Long Island

Dr. Andrew Stern is the founder of Smartfin, an initiative of the arts-based environmental nonprofit Lost Bird. Recently retired from his Neurology practice, Andy now devotes himself fully to raising awareness about our environment. Discovering a need in the scientific community for near-shore ocean data to better understand the effects of climate change on coastal systems, Andy began imagining a data-collecting device deployed on surfboards that would essentially turn surfers into citizen scientists. After enlisting the help of San Diego based engineers, the Smartfin took shape and is currently being tested by researchers at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography.

Colleen Henn has a passion for natural history, ecology, and environmental science. Having done field courses in both the Galapagos and the Sea of Cortez, Colleen knew that she had to bring her infatuation for the ocean to her line of work. She provides support for Surfrider's Blue Water Task Force labs across the country, assisting with the growth of new and existing labs, coordinating logistics and helping communicate critical water quality information to the public. Colleen also serves as the Eastern Long Island Chapter Coordinator, overseeing the clean water and plastic pollution programs programs and campaigns of her local chapter on the east end of Long Island, New York. Colleen brings the spirit of Surfrider wherever she goes.

Will Skudin is a native of Long Beach, NY and a professional surfer. Skudin is a third-generation surfer and along with his brother, Cliff, is the co-founder of Skudin Surf and Surf for All, a nonprofit organization.
