Call for Nominations! The 2016 Lowell Thomas Awards

Celebrating the Legacy of Open Spaces

October 15, 2016 in Santa Barbara, California

As explorers of the world, we frequently have the pleasure and privilege of moving through landscapes of amazing beauty, to witness pristine ecosystems, and to experience the overwhelming stillness found in earth’s wild and wide-open spaces. Whether we immerse ourselves in these places to conduct research or to find renewal, we know the supreme importance of these open lands to our own well-being and to the survival of all life forms. Thoreau said it like this: In Wildness is the preservation of the world. Yet, as much as we explorers depend on these places, we often lose sight of the significant efforts and dedication required to keep these places intact and safe from development and degradation.

For the 2016 Lowell Thomas Awards, we will honor the champions of wild and open lands. We seek the nomination of persons who have dedicated themselves to the preservation of wild places, intact ecosystems, and open lands; the guardians of places that inspire us to roam, get lost and explore. A qualified candidate would be both an explorer and an effective advocate for setting aside and/or preserving landscapes for parks, wilderness, sanctuaries or public lands, and may include, for example…

•   Field scientists working to resolve conflict between wildlife and agricultural uses so as to protect special ecosystems;

•   Educators, philanthropists and activists informing stakeholders and governmental authorities of the importance of setting aside particular land or ocean areas for low impact uses; and

•   Artists, photographers, and documentary filmmakers whose work is targeted at inspiring protection and stewardship of a specific place.

The Flag and Honors Committee invites you to participate by nominating explorers and scientists who are making exceptional contributions - consistent with this year’s theme - in the fields of exploration, scientific research, and who are dedicated to the principles of The Explorers Club as set forth in Articles II and III of the By-laws.
