The 2012 Lowell Thomas Awards : Call for Award Nominations

The 2012 Lowell Thomas Awards
Mindfulness: the Ultimate Tool in Exploration
New York, New York
October 13, 2012

Exploration demands not only physical endurance, extensive training, and a comprehensive toolkit but also a mental capacity to seamlessly enter environments vastly different from our own, be they natural, cultural, or psychological, to accomplish our goals.
Successful exploration requires keen awareness beforehand of the needs of the expedition and the tools of survival. In the field, mindfulness of the surrounding environment, both physical and cultural, the team dynamics, and one’s own thoughts, body, emotions and even spirit, is required.

This year, the Lowell Thomas Awards will celebrate those explorers who have exhibited an extraordinary capacity to transcend traditional comfort zones to undertake expeditions that benefit us all. These candidates may have the ability to control metabolic functions such as respiration and heart rate to avoid disturbing the life forms studied. Others may have the capacity to endure long periods of sensory deprivation; the ability to push away fear and personal concern and thus have the calmness and clearness of mind to both complete the expedition, and to make critical observations under difficult conditions.  Still other candidates may possess a heightened awareness of ancient customs or sacred geography upon entering an exotic cultural milieu.

We are seeking nominations for pre-eminent explorers who have employed mindfulness or situational awareness as a critical tool for exploration. The candidate’s work must extend beyond individual achievement to communicate his or her findings to benefit others.

The Flag and Honors Committee invites you to participate by nominating explorers and scientists who are making exceptional contributions in the fields of exploration, scientific research, and who are dedicated to the principles of The Explorers Club as set forth in Articles II and III of the By-laws.

The Lowell Thomas Award is intended to celebrate excellence and is not solely limited to Explorers Club members.  However, you must be an Explorers Club member in good standing to make a nomination.  You are invited to send your one or two page written nomination letter, with the candidate’s curriculum vita and exploration record details to:
